HIALEAH, Fla.- The Ave Maria University volleyball team dominated in every facet of the game Tuesday night, sweeping past the Conquistadors of Florida National University in Hialeah, 25-13, 25-13, 25-11.. The victory was Ave Maria's tenth consecutive victory over Florida National, who played in last season's NAIA Tournament as the champions of the Continental Athletic Conference, and the third consecutive sweep for the Gyrenes over FNU.
The Gyrenes quickly established dominance in the opening set, winning five of the first six points. Ave Maria wouldn't trail by less than three points from that point forward, and went on a 9-0 run to turn a 14-10 edge into a 23-10 lead. On their second attempt at set point, Abigail Gregory closed the set out with a kill for Ave Maria. 15 of Ave Maria's 25 points came as a result of AMU kills, as the Gyrenes posted a game-best .303 attack percentage.Â
It was much of the same in the second set, which saw the Gyrenes win by the same 12-point margin. After trailing 3-1 in the early moments of the frame, Ave Maria proceeded to go on a 14-2 run, which included nine consecutive points to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 12-4 lead. Ave Maria was on cruise control from that point forward, and a kill from Cabriella Bouterse on AMU's second set point sealed a 2-0 Ave Maria lead.
Ave Maria was even more dominant in the final set, securing their third win of the season with a 25-11 victory. After splitting the first two points, AMU went on a 17-4 to bury Florida National on their home floor. The Gyrenes emphatically put the victory away, claiming each of the final four points and six of the last seven, with a block by Cabriella Bouterse and Abigail Costlow putting the exclamation point on the win.
Bouterse led Ave Maria's attack with 12 kills, while Madelyn Haut converted on eight of her 13 swings, good for a .538 attack percentage. Reigning Sun Conference Setter of the Week Lily Witkoski passed out 25 assists, while Victoria Schein led the defensive effort with 12 digs. The Gyrenes were also adept on the serve, logging nine aces in the win. Schein led the way in that category with four, while Hannah Jones added three more.
The Gyrenes will play their final four games before the start of conference play this weekend, as AMU heads back to Georgia for the Truett McConnell University Invitational. Action will start on Friday, as Ave battles Georgetown College before a meeting with the host Bears. The event concludes on Saturday, when the Gyrenes take the floor against Brenau for the second time this season and battle Columbia College from South Carolina.
