Men's Soccer Falls in Resumption at Warner

LAKE WALES, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team dropped their first game of the season Tuesday afternoon in a makeup game against the Warner Royals 5-1. Despite the loss, two Gyrenes climbed the leaderboards for AMU individual season and career records.

For the first 20 minutes of the game were played back on August 25, as the two teams got a sense of the other and exchanged a couple of shots, but none were able to reach the back of the goal.

It was in the next few minutes when Warner started to break through and grab a hold of the lead. In the 25th minute, Warner's Hector Revelo got a shot past AMU goalie Rhys Lawlor and gave the Royals a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal Lawlor had allowed since the season opener on August 27th against Florida College in 311 game minutes.

Unfortunately, it only took three minutes for the next goal to get past Lawlor, this time from Deven Ingley and assisted by Phillip Jorgensen. Then two minutes later, the Royals extended their lead to 3-0 off another goal from Revelo.

In the second half, Ingley got his second goal, tying Revelo, and making the score 4-0.

Finally, in the 74th minute, the Gyrenes got on the board. Josh Gaeng scored his tenth goal of the season off an assist from Juan Parra which was his eighth. This was the highlight for Ave Maria. With the goal, Gaeng is now tied for fourth in most goals in an individual season for a Gyrene. He is also just seven goals away from passing Kensley Jean Baptiste for most career goals at AMU.

With the assist, Parra broke the Ave Maria record for most assists in a single season, passing Jean Baptiste who set the record in 2017. Parra, a junior transfer from St. Mary of the Woods, now looks to set the career record for assists, in just a single season. He is seven assists from tying Raphael Rodriguez, who played for the Gyrenes from 2017-2020, and eight from passing him.

The good times did not last long for the Gyrenes unfortunately, as just a mere 12 seconds later, Warner's Jorgensen scored his third goal of the season, put the Royals up 5-1, and crushed any Ave Maria hopes of making a comeback.

Following the loss, the Gyrenes drop to 4-1. Their next game is Saturday, September 17, at Gyrene Field against the Florida National Conquistadors. FNU comes into the match ranked 19th in the country.
