AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Gyrenes men's soccer team played their final game of the 2023 season Saturday afternoon and closed the book with a pair of goals from Jerron Dopwell. The Gyrenes ultimately lost the match, however, 5-2 to the Webber Warriors.
Webber scored one goal in the first half and three in the opening 14 minutes of the second half to get up to a quick 4-0 lead.
In the 67th minute, the Gyrenes put their first goal on the board with Dopwell finding the top right corner of the goal on a shot 30 yards out from the goal. It was his third goal of the season and first since September 30 when he got the first two goals in Ave Maria's 3-1 win over Warner. Dopwell received a nice pass from Jael Parraga before turning around and firing off the shot.
Webber tacked on their fifth and final goal in the 83rd minute.
The Gyrenes ended the season on a high note however, scoring the final goal of the game just 88 seconds later. Dopwell took a free kick from just outside the box and hit the top left corner this time for his fourth goal of the season.
Before the game kicked off, the five seniors on the squad were honored in a senior day celebration. All five seniors then got in the game, including Tim Ellis, who spent most of this season as a healthy scratch, and backup goaltender Ian Wall, who got to play the final four minutes of the game.
AMU finishes the 2023 season 2-15-1 overall and 2-12 in conference play. Because of their two conference wins on the season, the Gyrenes did not finish in last place in the Sun for the first time since 2018. It is a step in the right direction for the AMU soccer program under new head coach Cesar Markovic. The Gyrenes are excited to see what 2024 has to offer.
