Gyrenes End Skid in Final Regular Season Match

HIALEAH, Fla.- The Ave Maria University volleyball finally put a full match together on Sunday afternoon, and ended a seven-match losing streak with a three-set victory over Florida National University. The Gyrenes ended the regular season with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-22 victory over the Conquistadors, finishing off a season sweep of FNU and extending Ave Maria's win streak over Florida National to 13 matches.

The first set was closely contested for the first half of the frame, before the Gyrenes put together a major run to pull away. Trailing 13-12, the Gyrenes scored seven straight points to open up a 19-13 lead. That run extended to a 10-1 run, giving AMU a 22-14 lead. Florida National would not be able to get any closer than five points in the closing moments of the set, with an Anna Howard kill finishing off a 25-19 win.

Sunday's second set followed a very similar script. This time, Florida National held a 14-13 lead, and Ave Maria's response was a 11-2 run to claim a 24-16 lead. Florida National fought off Ave Maria's first four attempts at set point, cutting the AMU lead to 24-20. The Gyrenes finally put the set away with a block from Beatriz Rissi, putting Ave Maria one set away from their first win in 22 days.

Ave Maria clinched victory in the third set with a 25-22 victory, the closest margin of victory of the day. The Gyrenes pounded 16 kills in the final set, and kept the Conquistadors from ever taking a lead. AMU's clinching point came on their attempt, when Paeton Hyde slammed home a kill on an assist from Hannah Jones to seal the Gyrene victory.

Alayna Metherd had a monster game for the Gyrenes in all facets of the game. The junior logged 14 kills without committing an error, posting a .700 hitting percentage while also leading the team in digs with 14. Reina Thomas and Ryan Getz split setting duties, with the duo combining for 31 assists - 17 from Thomas and 14 from Getz. Ines Lopes joined Metherd in double figures in digs with ten.
