AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team earned its first home win of the 2023 season on Monday, rolling past the Conquistadors of Florida National University, 6-1, at the AMU Tennis Complex in Ave Maria. The Gyrenes were dominant in many of Monday's matches, winning a doubles match without allowing a single point and winning four singles sets by 6-0 scores en route to five total singles wins.
The top of Ave Maria's doubles lineup ensured the Gyrenes would head to singles play with a 1-0 lead. AMU's top pair of Vitoria Barandas and Lara Teodoro cruised their match, claiming a 6-0 win over FNU's Pirada Suwanruk and Salome Sierra. Valentine Colin and reigning Sun Conference Player of the Week Andrea Rodriguez Oria had a little more trouble, but emerged with a 6-4 win at the second flight. Those wins were enough for the Gyrenes, despite a 6-2 win by FNU's duo in the third flight.
Singles action was mostly controlled by the Gyrenes, who surrendered four total points or less in four of their five wins. Teodoro started strong at the top of the AMU lineup, earning a 6-0, 6-4 victory. Colin was responsible for AMU's most dominant singles performance, a 6-1, 6-0 win at the second flight. The closest match of the day came at the third flight, where Rodrigurez Oria battled back from a 6-2 loss in the first set to take the final two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-0.
Barandas continued her stellar play at the fourth flight, where she earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over her FNU opponent. Regina Ruiz added a win of her own at the fifth flight, surrendering just three points total in a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Florida National's lone win of the afternoon came at the sixth flight, where Fabiola Bsereni, who held a 7-6, 3-2 lead at the time, was declared winner by retirement.
Action in the nation's best tennis conference is set to begin Friday, as AMU plays two nationally recognized opponents in Sun Conference action this weekend. The Gyrenes start conference play in the Peach State, first facing (RV) Coastal Georgia in Brunswick on Friday. The action then shifts to Savannah on Saturday, when AMU faces its toughest competition to date in the form of No. 3 SCAD-Savannah.
