AMU Falls in Home SUN Opener

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Gyrenes suffered another shoutout loss Saturday night, falling to the Florida Memorial Lions 3-0.

FMU broke a scoreless tie in the 21st minute with Jeremiah Johnson knocking in an assist from Kervens Joseph. In the 39th minute, the Lions extended their lead off a Brad Tulley penalty kick goal. Finally, in the 74th minute, Tulley struck again to give Florida Memorial their third and final goal.

On the home side, the Gyrenes registered seven shots with only one on goal. The lone shot on goal, which came in the first half, was their first since the first half of the game against Johnson. Unfortunately, it was saved by the Lions' goalie, Josh Aranzazu, and the Gyrenes did not get any other looks at the goal.

Senior goalie Rhys Lawlor made seven saves, giving him a career total of 252, the second most in Ave Maria history. He is just 56 saves away from tying Andrea Salomone for the most saves in Gyrene history.

With the loss, the Gyrenes fall to 0-5-1 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

Ave Maria is on the road for their next match, travelling up to Babson Park to take on the Webber Warriors Wednesday, September 20. The Gyrenes are 4-4 in their last eight matches against the Warriors. Ave Maria is back home September 23 with an afternoon game against the SCAD Bees. Both matches can be streamed on the Sun Digital Network.
