WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's Soccer team dropped their eighth game of the season and fifth game in a row Wednesday night, losing to the #17 Keiser Seahawks 5-0. Like their previous two matches, the Gyrenes played strong defensively in the first half taking a 0-0 tie into the break, but then fell apart in the second half.
The game was originally scheduled to start at 1:30 but had to be pushed back due to inclement weather on the east coast. After being pushed back an hour in the morning and then waiting out a two-hour lightning delay, the two teams finally took the pitch at 4:30.
The Gyrene defense started out hot, taking on 11 shots from the Seahawks. Only two were on goal and both were turned aside by senior goalkeeper Rhys Lawlor. Unfortunately, on the offensive side, AMU did not record any shots in the opening 45 minutes. At the half, both teams went into the locker room locked at zero.
In the second half, Keiser pulled ahead of Ave Maria scoring their first goal in the 52nd minute on a header off a cross. KU struck again in the 62nd, 70th, 81st, and 84th minutes to collect all five of their goals.
The Seahawks finished the period with eight shots on goal, only three of which were stopped by Lawlor.
On the other end of the field, Ave Maria got four shots and one on goal, though it was stopped by Seahawk goalie Santiago Nebot.
With the loss, the Gyrenes fall to 0-8-1 overall and 0-5 in conference play. Ave Maria stays on the road Saturday when they take the trip up to Lake Wales, Florida, to take on the Warner Royals who are just above the Gyrenes in the Sun standings. Ave Maria's next home game is Wednesday, October 4, when the Gyrenes host #3 St. Thomas.
