MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's Soccer team scored their first goal in five matches, but it wasn't enough as the Gyrenes fell to the Florida Memorial Lions 3-1.
Florida Memorial opened the scoring in the 28
th minute. The Lions got behind the Gyrene defense on the right side of the goal, crossed it over and buried the ball in the net off one touch.
The score remained 1-0 for the remainder of the first half.
In the second frame, Florida Memorial struck two more times before the Gyrenes got on the scoreboard. The second and game-winning goal for the Lions was in the 65
th minute and unfortunately overshadowed a great save from Andrija Vujakovic.
An FMU attacker took a shoot deep from beyond the penalty box that was on target, but luckily for the Gyrenes, Vujakovic made a diving stop to keep the Lions off the board. Before a Lion could put the rebound in the net it was cleared away by Padriac Pierson.
However, the clear went right back to a Florida Memorial attacker, who crossed the ball back into the scoring area, and was headed into the back of the net.
The Lions scored their final goal in the 74
th minute to take a 3-0 lead.
In the final three minutes of the game, the Gyrenes found some offense and got on the scoreboard for the first time since September 18, spoiling the shutout for the Lions.
Mateo Rolon was tripped up going for the ball eliciting a foul on Florida Memorial and setting up a free kick just outside the penalty area. Rolon put a good spin on the ball for it to wrap around the wall of defenders and bend right back into the right side of the net.
It is Rolon's third goal of the season, which leads the team.
With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 1-8-2 on the year and 0-4-1 in conference play.
The Gyrenes stay on the road for their next game as they travel to West Palm Beach to take on the #13 Keiser Seahawks Saturday, October 19. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
The next time the Gyrenes are home is Monday October 21 in makeup game against the New College of Florida Mighty Banyans. The game was originally scheduled for October 9 but had to be moved due to Hurricane Milton.
Both games will be streamed live on the Sun Digital Network.
