Men’s Soccer Draws on Senior Day

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's Soccer team played to a scoreless draw Wednesday afternoon against the Webber Warriors on senior day. It is the third tie of the season for the Gyrenes and the second to end 0-0.

Ave Maria controlled most of the possession for the first half, outshooting Webber 7-4. Three of the seven shots were on goal for the Gyrenes but were all stopped by the Warriors' keeper. On the other end of the pitch, only one of the four shots from Webber was on target, but freshman keeper Andrija Vujakovic made the stop to keep the game tied at zero.

The second half was much like the first in that the Gyrenes controlled the ball and outshot the Warriors, but still couldn't find the back of the net. Ave Maria took three shots on goal again the final frame but were all stopped by the Webber goalie. Vujakovic stopped two more shots, including one in the final six minutes of the game.

Overall, Ave Maria outshot Webber 14-9 and led 6-3 in shots on goal. It is the second game in a row the Gyrenes have led in both those categories.

The tie is the first non-loss result for the Gyrenes on a senior day game since 2018. It is also their third of the season, moving their record to 2-10-3 overall and 0-6-2 in conference play.

For Vujakovic, it is his fourth shoutout of the season, setting a new program record for clean sheets in a year. The previous mark stood for 13 years with Andres Martin keeping opponents off the board three times in 2011. Vujakovic also ties the record for most shutouts in a career, matching Martin and Rhys Lawlor.

The Gyrenes are on the road for one more match in 2024 as they travel to Miami Gardens to take on the St. Thomas Bobcats. The Gyrenes have already played St. Thomas once this season, dropping a close 1-0 game back in September. Saturday Ave Maria gets a second shot at the number four team in the country and will try to end the season in a big way. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the Sun Digital Network.
