Swim Takes on Top Ranked Keiser

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Swim team hosted their final home meet of the fall season Wednesday against the top ranked Keiser Seahawks. The KU women's team came into meet No. 1 in the country while the men were ranked second. Ave Maria finished second in both the men's and women's competitions but did have some standout races throughout the day.

On the women's side, Ave Maria finished first in two races, first with Anna Szucs winning the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:04.30. Maeve O'Brien finished third in the race, setting a personal best at 1:07.03. It was one of four personal bests set Wednesday for the Lady Gyrenes. The other PRs set in the meet were Szucs in the 50-yard freestyle, Luna Calderon in the 100-yard freestyle and Delaney Weisbruch in the 200-yard individual medley. Weisbruch placed second in the race with a time of 2:18.07.

The other win for the Lady Gyrenes was Gabby Darakchieva in the 100-yard backstroke. Darakchieva won the race by almost a whole two seconds with a time of 1:02.32.

Other standout performances from the women's team was Stella Paradise finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle, Emma Heasty placing third in both the 100 and 200-yard freestyle, and Weisbruch placing third in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Gyrene men did not win any races on Wednesday, but still had some good swims. The men had one personal record set in the meet, with Thomas Austin finishing the 1650-yard freestyle in 18:27.34.

Two Gyrenes placed in the meet. Michael Blawas came in second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.94 and Eli Pelzer finished in third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:00.31.

The dual meet wraps up the three-meet home season this fall, the most for Ave Maria in program history. The Gyrenes have one more meet before the semester break. Ave Maria travels up to Columbus, Georgia, to compete in the Small College Championships for the third year in a row. The meet is November 21-23 and is hosted this year by Life University. Last year, Ave Maria finished second in both the men's and women's competitions out of six and seven teams, respectively.
