AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University softball team ran their winning streak to six games on Friday with two very different wins in a sweep over Trinity Baptist College at the AMU Softball Complex. Ave Maria cruised to a 16-0 victory over the Eagles in the opener, marking the 100th career victory for head coach Juliaclare Plezbert, then walked off with a 2-1 extra inning win in the nightcap. The wins moved AMU's all-time record against TBC to 16-0.
The runs in game one came easy for the Gyrenes, starting with three in the bottom of the first. The second AMU hitter of the day, Ashley Lykins, gave Ave Maria a 1-0 lead with an RBI single to plate Cecilia Garrett, who led off with a single of her own. Lykins would eventually come around to score herself on a wild pitch, with an error from TBC allowing a third Gyrene run to cross the plate.
After a scoreless second inning, the Gyrenes tacked on three more in the third. After a walk and a fielder's choice started the inning, Annabella Phillips doubled down the left field line to make it 4-0. Hailee Howe would eventually drive in Phillips with an infield single, then scored the sixth run of the afternoon on a double from Ashley Nelson.Â
Ave Maria's bats exploded in the bottom of the fourth, a ten-run frame that essentially ended the contest. The ten Gyrene runs scored on two bases loaded walks to Annalise Anderson and Genevieve Peterson, two bases loaded hit batsmen drawn by Howe and Lykins, an RBI single from Lindee Rosekrans, and the two biggest hits of the inning - a two-run single from Karsyn Moore and a three-run triple by Lindsey Watson.Â
AMU's 16 runs were more than enough support for starter Gina Gallegos. The junior allowed just one hit over her four innings of work, earning her second win of the season. Ashley Altman came on in relief of Gallegos, and finished off the 16-0 win with a 1-2-3 frame in the top of the fifth.Â
In game two, Trinity Baptist scored an unearned run in the first inning, but were shut down for the remainder of the game by starter Kaedyn Sutton. Sutton did not allow an earned run across eight innings in the circle, striking out three TBC hitters without a walk. Sutton no-hit the Eagles last season, with Friday's effort increasing her streak of innings without allowing an earned run to the Eagles to 13.
It took all seven innings for the Gyrene bats to wake up, but the clutch hitting finally came through in the bottom of the seventh. Ashley Lykins led off with a single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kylee Lewis. Ashley Altman then tied the game with a single down the right field line, sending the game to extra innings.
Sutton shut down the Eagles in the top of the eighth, and gave the Gyrenes a golden opportunity to win it in the bottom half. Marisa Michi led off the frame with a single, but remained there with two outs. One out away from heading to the ninth, Ashley Nelson walked it off for the Gyrenes, lining a double to right center.
Winners of six straight, the Gyrenes will test themselves against NCAA Division II Palm Beach Atlantic University on Saturday. First pitch from West Palm Beach is scheduled for noon.
