Men's Tennis Finishes Regular Season with Win

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's tennis team concluded the regular season with a weekend split, falling 4-0 to the Keiser University Seahawks before finishing the conference schedule with a 4-0 win over the Bobcats of St. Thomas University. The win in the season finale allowed the Gyrenes to finish tied for third in one of the nation's top tennis conferences, with seeding for The Sun Conference Tournament later this month to be finalized in the coming days.

Ave Maria did not have an answer for the reigning Sun Conference champions on Friday, falling 4-0 to the third-ranked team in the nation, the Keiser Seahawks. Keiser started their victory with a decisive win of the doubles point, winning 6-1 at the second flight and 6-2 at the third flight. The showdown at the top flight, between AMU's duo, ranked 12th in the nation, and Keiser's duo, ranked 11th, lived up to the billing, with the match tied at three when the doubles point was clinched.

It didn't take long for Keiser to clinch the match, thanks to wins at the third, fifth, and sixth singles flights. Keiser won the match at the third flight due to retirement, and won the matches at the fifth and sixth flights decisively, winning 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0, respectively. The closest matches were at the first and fourth flights, as Gaston Erhardt and Pedro Garcia were even in the first set with their Keiser counterparts when the third singles decision was clinched.

AMU's fortunes flipped on Senior Day, with the Gyrenes taking control in a 4-0 victory over the St. Thomas Bobcats. Ave Maria's top doubles team of Gaston Erhardt and Anderson Duggan got the doubles action underway with a 6-1 victory, while the brother duo of Juan Ignacio and Pedro Garcia finishing the job with a 6-3 win at the third flight. 

The top of Ave Maria's lineup then clinched victory in singles play, with Ave Maria earning wins at the top three flights. Erhardt finished off an undefeated weekend with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the top flight, while Tom Alias won in a similar fashion with a 6-3, 6-1 victory aat the second flight. The most dominant win of the day came from Duggan, who was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at the third flight. Julien Mourad was also close to a victory, leading 6-3, 4-1 at the sixth flight when the remaining three singles matches were abandoned.

The win in the season finale allowed the Gyrenes to finish tied for third in one of the nation's top tennis conferences, with seeding for The Sun Conference Tournament later this month to be finalized in the coming days. Ave Maria, with a 4-3 conference record, will play in a quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday, with the tournament held in Brunswick, Georgia.
