WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team couldn't get retribution against an NCAA Division II opponent on Tuesday, falling 6-1 to the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic University, the Gyrenes' second loss of the season against the Sailfish. Ave Maria's top doubles team and top singles player both earned victories on Tuesday, but the Sailfish were dominant elsewhere to finish off a season sweep of the Gyrenes.
Palm Beach Atlantic started Tuesday's match by winning the doubles point, although the Gyrenes did pick up the win at the top spot. The team of Vitoria Barandas and Clara Penido cruised to a 6-3 victory over PBA's top team, running their winning streak as a duo to seven matches. However, the Sailfish picked up a 6-0 decision at the second flight and a 6-1 victory at the third flight to ensure the doubles point.
Barandas continued to be the brightest spot on the AMU roster, winning again in singles play for Ave Maria's lone point of the day. The Brazilian junior dominated PBA's top player, Jasmine Williams, to the tune of a 6-2, 6-1 victory. The win was Barandas' sixth consecutive singles victory, and moved her overall singles record to 8-4. Barandas is currently Ave Maria's overall wins leader with 18 - ten in doubles, eight in singles.
The Salifish controlled the other five matches, however. Palm Beach Atlantic claimed the five matches from flights two through six, winning all five in straight sets to seal a 6-1 victory over the Gyrenes.
Ave Maria's final three matches of the regular season will all be Sun Conference matches, and all three will be against nationally recognized competition. The first of these matches will come Saturday, when AMU hosts No. 9 SCAD-Savannah in a match that was postponed from last month due to weather. The regular season will then conclude with matches against No. 2 Keiser and No. 7 St. Thomas. All three matches will be played at the AMU Tennis Complex.
