Men’s Soccer Storms Back to Tie Warner

AVE MARIA, Fla. — It didn't look good for the Ave Maria men's soccer team Wednesday night down two goals after 80 minutes of play, but as the saying goes, "it ain't over til it's over." Ave Maria went into a frenzy in the final 10 minutes of their midweek match against the Warner Royals and notched to two goals to end the game in 3-3 tie.

Both of the late goals were off set plays for the Gyrenes. The first was in the 83rd minute with Nikolas Briceno finding Mateo Rolon off the corner. Rolon, a freshman from Capitán Bermúdez, Argentina, was standing at the goal line of the football field and knocked the ball in from 10 yards to bring the Gyrenes within one.

Down one, Ave Maria kept applying the pressure and forced another corner kick three minutes later. Again, Briceno led the play off with a good kick from the corner and bounced the ball right in front of the goal. Multiple Gyrenes and Royals touched the ball, but it was another freshman, Sava Cadjenovic, that finished the play popping the ball into the net. It was Cadjenovic's first goal of the season.

"For the last couple of years, we've been very effective on set pieces, we play for them sometimes, you know, we're looking for them, and our guys get into that box and they the feeling that they are going to score," said head coach Cesar Markovic after the game.

Ave Maria got one more look at the net in attempt to win the game, but the ball was a too high off the foot of Padriac Pierson.

The scoring started in the first half with each team finding the board. Warner opened the scoring with a goal in the 24th minute off a rebounded shot. Keeper Andrija Vujakovic made the first save but the ball bounced off him and right onto the foot of a Royal who put it into the back of the net.

The Gyrenes tied it up in the 38th minute with Rolon getting his first goal of the game. It was also his first of the season, and the goal off the corner late in the game now ties him for the team lead with two.

Warner retook the lead right before halftime with a goal in the 41st minute.

In the second half, the Royal extended their lead to two goals in the 82nd minute. It was a lead the Royals thought they would hold, but the great final ten minutes from the Gyrenes forced the game to end in a 3-3 tie.

Along with the score being even, both teams ended with the same number of shots on goal, eight, and number of fouls, 10. The Gyrenes had the advantage in corners, getting nine to Warner's three.

"I certainly don't think anyone thought we were going to comeback from 3-1 down," said Markovic. "To score two goals and almost win it at the end, you have to give credit to the guys for hanging in there and fighting."

With the tie, Ave Maria extending their unbeaten streak against Warner to three matches now, going 2-0-1 against them since last season. The Gyrenes overall record moves to 1-3-2 and the conference records moves to 0-1-1.

The Gyrenes are on the road for their next match as they take on the New College of Florida Mighty Banyans for the first time in program history. The Mighty Banyans are 0-2 in conference play to start their inaugural season as Sun Conference member, with losses to Kieser and SCAD. The game will be streamed live on the Sun Digital Network with kickoff set for 5 p.m.
