BABSON PARK, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's Soccer team needed a win to keep their postseason hopes alive but unfortunately fell 2-1 to the Webber Warriors.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first half, playing to a 0-0 draw at the break. Webber controlled the ball for most of the half, outshooting Ave Maria 7-3. Both teams had two shots on goal though, with Sava Cadjenovic recording both for Ave Maria.
Webber broke the scoreless tie in the 56
th minute. Following a throw-in from Webber, the ball pinballed between a multitude of Warriors and Gyrenes and wound up at the feet of Jesus Perez with nobody in front of him. Perez fired a shot into the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
For the next twenty minutes, Webber tried to run the clock out on the Gyrenes, but Ave Maria fought back.
In the 78
th minute, Jose Jacquet was ripped down in the box, setting up a penalty kick for the Gyrenes. Sava Cadjenovic, Ave Maria's leading scorer, stepped up to take the kick and knocked it through on the right side of the goal. It was just AMU's second penalty kick attempt this season, and the Gyrenes have converted on both of them.
Rejuvenated from the goal, Ave Maria had 12 minutes left to score one more and keep their postseason hopes alive. A tie would have done them no good as they needed three points in the standings to keep pace with New College and Southeastern.
The Gyrenes recorded four shots in the final dozen minutes, with two of them directed on goal from Levi Orlando and Landon Gomez. However, the Webber keeper was there to make the save both times. Following the second shot on goal from Gomez, Ave Maria only recorded one more shot that went high before the end of the match.
Webber controlled the ball for the final minutes and knocked a goal in with 37 seconds remaining on the clock, securing the match and getting their first conference win of the season.
With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 6-9-2 and 1-6 in conference play. With just three points in the standings and only one game left remaining, the Gyrenes are mathematically eliminated from postseason contention.
Ave Maria has one final match in the regular season as they play host to the New College of Florida Mighty Banyans on Wednesday, October 29. The Mighty Banyans secured their spot in the tournament with the Gyrenes' loss to Webber. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be streamed live on the Urban Edge Network.
