MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Ave Maria Women's Basketball team wrapped up the Jimmy Faulkner Classic Saturday, falling to the host Faulkner Eagles 88-43.
After a quick bucket from the Eagles, Ashley Chilson hit a three-pointer to give Ave Maria their first lead of the season. The Gyrenes kept their lead for about four minutes, getting a bucket from Reagan Cooper and then back-to-back threes from Parker Straub and Chilson.
Faulkner took the lead with four minutes remaining in the opening frame and never gave it back.
The second quarter was the worst of the game with Ave Maria being held to three points. The Gyrenes went 1-for-7 from the floor and turned the ball over nine times. On the other side of the court, Faulkner scored 19 points and took a 42-18 lead into the break.
The Gyrenes did better in the third and fourth quarters but were still outscored by the Eagles in both frames. Ave Maria hit two three-pointers in each quarter.
Chilson led the team with 15 points, her second game in a row with double-digit points. Freshman Giavanna Rogers was the only other Gyrene to hit double-digits with 11 points. Rogers led the team behind the arc, knocking down three of the team's seven three-pointers.
With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 0-2 on the year.
The Gyrenes return to the Sunshine State following their two-game stay in Alabama but still have a couple of weeks before their home opener at the Tom Golisano Field House. Ave Maria is back in action Wednesday, October 29, when the travel east to Hialeah to take on the Florida National Conquistadors. The Gyrenes swept FNU last year, winning both meetings at home. Wednesday will be Ave Maria's first ever trip to FNU and the seventh overall meeting between the two teams.
