Lacrosse Falls to NCAA Lynn

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Gyrenes welcomed one of the top team in the NCAA Division II Saturday afternoon when they hosted the Lynn Fighting Knights for their second game of the season. The Knights entered the game ranked 12th in the country in DII and showed it beating the Gyrenes 18-3.

Lynn scored the first seven goals of the game, striking six times in the first quarter and netting the opening goal in the second.

Lily Hynds scored the first goal for the Gyrenes, finding the back of the net off a nice feed from Hannah Shaffrey. It is the first goal of her sophomore year after a 25-goal campaign in her freshman season. For Shaffrey, it is her third assist of the year. The assist was the only point of the game for Shaffrey who is now at 163 career points. She is five away from tying, six from passing, head coach Katelyn Sherman for the most points in an Ave Maria career.

Lynn went on another big run, scoring 11 goals in a row to get to their final total of 18. Six were scored in the second quarter, four in the third and one in the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, the Gyrenes got on the board two more times after the opening goal from the Fighting Knights. Both goals were netted by senior Abbey Seiler. Seiler now has three goals on the season and 115 in her Ave Maria career. She is now just six goals away from tying Emma Davis (2019-22) for the second most goals in AMU history.

With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 0-2 to start the season.

The Gyrenes are on the road for their next five games against a gauntlet of NAIA teams. All five opponents received votes in the coaches preseason poll, with three teams being ranked in the Top 10. The road stand starts with a neutral site game in Georgetown, Kentucky, against Marian University Friday, February 21. Marian was a receiving votes team in the poll, essentially being ranked 11th in the country while the Gyrenes were ranked 10th. The opening draw is set for 12 p.m. Host Georgetown will not stream the game, but live stats will be provided throughout the contest, and the link can be found on the Lacrosse schedule on www.avemariagyrenes.com.
