Rough Third Quarter Sinks Lacrosse

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — The Ave Maria Lacrosse team wrapped up their Kentucky road trip Sunday afternoon, falling to the third ranked Cumberlands Patriots 16-6. It was a really rough third quarter that saw the Gyrenes get outscored 6-1 that put the game out of reach for Ave Maria.

The Cumberlands opened the scoring with three straight goals, but the Gyrenes responded with two goals of their own to keep it close. Abbey Seiler scored both goals for the Gyrenes, the first being a goal on the man advantage assisted by Annie Dhabliwala and the second being a just a minute later unassisted.

The Patriots tacked on another, but again the Gyrenes made it a one score game. This time it was Dhabliwala finding the back of the net, assisted by Anna Bocchino. At the end of the fist quarter, Ave Maria trailed by just one at 4-3.

The second quarter opened similar to the first with the Cumberlands scoring three straight goals to start the frame.

Seiler got her third goal of the game to bring the Gyrenes back within three. Hannah Shaffrey got the assist on the goal for her first point of the game, officially passing her by head coach Katelyn Sherman for the most points in AMU history. Shaffrey had a big five-point game in the first game in Kentucky to tie the record before finally breaking it in the second quarter.

The Seiler goal was the last of the half and the Cumberlands took a 7-4 lead into the break.

Down three goals, the Gyrenes were in striking distance entering the second half, but a bad 15 minutes led to a huge lead for the Patriots. UC struck for six goals in a row to take a commanding 13-4 lead.

Lily Hynds scored the lone goal for Ave Maria with a minute left in the third quarter. Shaffrey got the assist for her second of the night.

Ave Maria scored one more goal in the fourth quarter off the stick of Alexandra Mazurczak assisted by Dhabliwala. The Cumberlands scored three goals on the other end of the field to make the final score 16-6.

Dhabliwala and Seiler tied for the most points in the game for the Gyrenes, each with three. All three of Seiler's points were goals in her 18th career game with a hat trick of better. Dhabliwala had one goal and two assists. Shaffrey was the only other Gyrene with a multi-point game with two assists.

With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 0-4.

The Gyrenes are on the road for three more games over spring break, taking a trip to Kansas and Missouri to take on Ottawa, Benedictine, and Missouri Baptist. The first of the three games is against Ottawa Sunday, March 2. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the KCAC Network. The link can be found on the schedule page.
