Women’s Tennis Opens Home Season

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Tennis team opened their home season Wednesday afternoon, playing host to the Florida National Conquistadors. It was the first match in over three weeks for the Lady Gyrenes after starting the season on the road against Nova Southeastern February 1. Ave Maria fell to FNU 4-0.

Florida National won the doubles point, winning the second and third doubles pairings 6-3 and 6-0. The first doubles pairing featured Clara Penido and Mariangel Nunez who won five games in their set, the most any pairing has won this season, but was called a draw with the Conquistadors winning the other two sets.

In the singles round, FNU won the first matches to finish to win 4-0. The Conquistadors won the second, fourth and fifth pairings. None of the six Gyrenes won a set in the singles round, but Penido got pretty close, dropping her first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker. Before she could start the next set, FNU won the match.

With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. Wednesday was the first of four home matches at the AMU Tennis Facility.

The Gyrenes are back home Tuesday, March 4, against the University of Mary Marauders. It is the first time since 2016 the Gyrenes have taken on the Marauders on the tennis court. UMary won the first two meetings between the two.
