In the early game against the Pioneers, the Gyrenes won three of the five flights in two sets. Top pair Ines Lopes and Adriana Bravo won 21-17, 21-12, third pair Kate Lyons and Beatriz Rissi win 21-9, 21-10, and fifth pair Natalia Cassata and DeAnna Barrett won 21-17, 21-11.

In the other two flights, Spartanburg Methodist won the middle set to force a third, but both Gyrene pairs came out on top to secure the 5-0 victory.

Ave Maria did even better in the final match of the weekend, winning all 10 sets against the Tigers for the 5-0 victory.

Lyons and Rissi had the next best flight, winning 21-7, 21-11.

The tightest flight was the second one, with Ryan Getz and Emily Child winning 21-18, 21-19.

With the two wins on Saturday, the Gyrenes improve to 6-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play. Ave Maria is also now 5-1 at home at the Suppa Malec Beach Volleyball Complex with two more matches left on their home schedule.

The Gyrenes are on the road for their next two matches, taking a trip up to St. Petersburg, Florida, Thursday, March 20, to take on the Barry Buccaneers and the Eckerd Tritons. Ave Maria beat Barry 4-1 Tuesday, March 11, to kick off their home season. It was their first win over an NCAA Division II school in program history.
