Lacrosse Crushes Warner

LAKE WALES, Fla. — With a sour taste in their mouth after blowing a halftime lead over the number one team in the country, the Ave Maria Lacrosse team stormed into Lake Wales Saturday and dominated the Royals, winning 24-2. It is the most goals the Gyrenes have scored in one game in program history, breaking the previous record by two goals.

The Gyrenes opened the scoring just 28 seconds in with Anna Bocchino scoring on the first shot attempt of the match. Abbey Seiler added a goal about three minutes later to put Ave Maria up 2-0.

Warner got a goal back a little over a minute after the Seiler goal. This was the closest the Royals would ever be to the Gyrenes for the rest of the game.

After the Warner goal, Ave Maria rattled off 22 goals in a row from six minutes into the first quarter to eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. Over the span of 45 game minutes, that was a goal every two minutes and some change from the Gyrenes.

Ave Maria finished the first quarter up 7-2. They scored seven more goals in the second quarter to take a 14-2 lead into halftime.

Even with a running clock in the second half, the Gyrenes still managed to pack in the goals, scoring five in the third and five in the fourth quarter.

Warner the final goal of the game to make the score 24-2 with five minutes left to play.

Twenty-four goals is a new program record for the Ave Maria Gyrenes, passing the previous record of 22. Ave Maria had hit that mark once in each of the last two years and have now passed it in 2025. The Gyrenes had 13 assists in the game as well, which is tied for the most in a match in program history. Ave Maria had 13 assists once before in a match against St. Thomas in 2023, which the Gyrenes won 22-2.

The two goals allowed today is also tied for the second fewest goals allowed by Ave Maria.

Individually, seven Gyrenes had multi-point games. Hannah Shaffrey led the team with seven points, netting one goal and six assists. Seiler and Bocchino were next with six points. Both had five goals and one assist. Five goals ties Bocchino's career high at Ave Maria.

The last four Gyrenes with a multi-point game was Lily Hynds with five, Annie Dhabliwala and Alexandra Mazurczak with four and Alison Fifield with three.

In the midfield, Seiler led the team with seven draw controls. Defensively, three Gyrenes tied with two caused turnovers.

In goal, Emily Durr only faced six shots and stopped four of them for a save percentage of .667. She gets her fourth win of the season and the 14th of her career.

With the win, Ave Maria improves to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

The Gyrenes are back in action at home Saturday, March 29, as they take on the St. Thomas Bobcats. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the Sun Digital Network.
