SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Ave Maria Women's Tennis team fell to the No. 11 SCAD Bees Saturday afternoon 4-0. The Gyrenes struggled to get anything going in the match against the Bees as they fall to 1-2 in conference play.
SCAD won the doubles point winning the first and third pairings 6-3 and 6-0 respectively. Elizabeth Pince and Danna Nunez were holding their own in the second pairing only trailing by one game, but the set was called at 4-3 when their other two sets wrapped up.
In the singles round, SCAD got quick wins in the second, fourth and fifth pairings. The fourth and fifth pairings were both clean 6-0, 6-0 sweeps.
No Gyrene won a set in the singles round. Maria Hofmeister came really close to winning her second set and forcing a third, but the match was called before she could win, ending unfinished with a score of 5-1.
With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 4-4 on the year and 1-2 in conference play.
The Gyrenes are back home Friday and Saturday, March 28-29, for two matches against No. 4 Southeastern and Warner. Southeastern is 2-1 in league play while Warner is 0-2. Last year, the Gyrenes fell to the Fire 4-0 and beat the Royals 4-0. That win over Warner is what propelled the Gyrenes into the top six in the conference and into the postseason.
Friday's match against the Fire is set to start at 1 p.m.
