AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's Tennis team lost the second to last home match of the season to the Southeastern Fire, falling 4-0. The Gyrenes put up a good fight and took the pairings a lot deeper than expected against the No. 3 team in the country.
In the doubles round, Southeastern won the first two pairings 6-2 and 6-4 to clinch the point. In the third pairing, Juan Garcia and Pedro Garcia were tied with their Southeastern counterparts 5-5 when the round was called.
In the singles round, Southeastern won the first three pairings to finish to clinch the match. The last two pairings were the first to finish, each ending with 6-1, 6-1 scores.
The top pairing was the clinching point. Anderson Duggan put up a fight, but fell 6-4, 6-3.
In each of the three unfinished pairings, Ave Maria had won a set. In the second pairing, Pedro Garcia won the opening set 6-3 before dropping the second. In the third pairing, Juan Garcia won the first set 7-6 and was tied 2-2 in the second set when the match was called. Gianmarco Punzo dropped the first set in the fourth pairing but came back to win 7-6 in the second set before ending unfinished in the third.
With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Gyrenes close out their home schedule Saturday, March 29, against the Warner Royals. The Royals are 2-2 in conference play and a win will go a long way in securing the Gyrenes a spot in the postseason.
It is also Senior Day for the Gyrenes, and they will honor the two seniors, Nolan Smith and Juan Garcia, on the team. The match is set to start at the conclusion of the women's match with Senior Day festivities beginning at 10:30 a.m.
