BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The Ave Maria Women's Tennis team lost in the Sun Conference Quarterfinals Wednesday morning to the Southeastern Fire 4-0. The Gyrenes played well but couldn't hang with the fourth ranked team in the country.
Southeastern won the doubles round by taking the sets in the first and third pairings. The Fire won each set 6-3. Dana Nunez and Elizabeth Pince had won four games in the second pairing when the round was the called, the most of three Gyrenes duos.
In the singles round, Southeastern got quick two-set wins in the third, fifth and sixth pairings. The sixth pairing was the quickest, with the Fire winning 6-1, 6-0. The fifth and third pairings both ended 6-0, 6-2.
Clara Penido won the only set for the Gyrenes in the top pairing. After falling in the first frame 6-1, the senior rallied back and took the second set by the same score of 6-1. The match was called before she could close out her pairing.
With the loss, Ave Maria exits the Sun Conference Tournament and finishes the 2025 season with a record of 5-8. The Gyrenes improved by two wins from last season and made the Sun Conference tournament for the third year in a row.
Individually, three Gyrenes tied for the most wins on team with Elizabeth Pince, Abigail Rich and Penido all winning five pairings in the season. Penido was the only one to post a winning record at 5-4.
In doubles play, Rich and Maria Hoffmeister were the best duo for the Gyrenes, winning a team-high four pairings all in the third slot.
