Men’s Tennis Falls in Sun Semis

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The Ave Maria Men's Tennis team lost in the Sun Conference Semifinal Thursday afternoon, falling 4-0 to the Keiser Seahawks. The Gyrenes exit the conference tournament with a record of 1-1.

In the opening doubles round, all three pairings ended around the same time and all of them were won by the Seahawks by a score of 6-3.

In the singles round, Keiser won the first three pairings to finish to and complete the shutout. The Seahawks got wins in the second, fifth and sixth positions. All three pairings were won in two straight sets, and each pairing had a set finish 6-0.

In the other three pairings, Anderson Duggan won the most games for the Gyrenes with a total of five. The senior fell 6-1 in the first frame but was leading 4-3 against the Seahawks' top player in the second set when the match was called.

Juan Garcia won four games in the third pairing and Gianmarco Punzo won three games in the fourth.

With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 8-8 on the year and exits the conference tournament with a 1-1 record.

The Gyrenes now await to see if their stay in Georgia was enough to sneak into the National Tournament. Twenty-four teams make the big dance for the NAIA and the Gyrenes were ranked 29th in the country in the final Coaches' Poll released Wednesday, April 23, putting them on the bubble.

The full national bracket will be released next week following the conclusion of all the conference tournaments.
