Volleyball Falls in Neutral Site Match

BRADENTON, Fla. - The Ave Maria University volleyball team ended their weekend in Bradenton Saturday morning, falling in straight sets to the Florida College Falcons in a neutral site contest. For the second time in the 2025 season, Ave Maria dropped a three-set decision to the Falcons, falling by a 25-23, 25-14, 25-20 score. Ave Maria ended their weekend with a 1-1 record, defeating New College on their home floor on Friday before falling to Florida College on Saturday morning.

AMU's morning got off to a slow start, as the Gyrenes fell to Florida College for the second time this season. The Gyrenes had their chances in the first set, leading as late as 19-18 and having the score tied at 22 before dropping three of the final four points. Florida College, who hit .224 as a team, then controlled much of the second and third sets, winning 25-14 and 25-20. The Gyrenes were done in by their own errors in the final two sets, logging just 12 kills to 17 errors on the attack.

In the opener, Ryan Getz was Ave Maria's leading attacker, logging nine kills. She was also one of the team's top defenders with eleven digs. Maria Teixeira (11) and Caroline Myers (10) combined for 21 assists, with four Gyrenes logging more than ten digs. Abbey Grose and Maylis DeTar led the Gyrenes with 12, while Getz and Mara Delyon added eleven each.

A second scheduled match of the day, which would have seen Ave Maria battle the Conquistadors of Florida National University, was canceled, ending AMU's weekend up Florida's Gulf Coast with a 1-1 record.

With the exception of a third matches against Florida College and a second match against Florida National during the month of October, the remainder of the Gyrenes' schedule will come in Sun Conference play. Ave Maria, who is 1-0 in SUN play after Friday's win over New College, will head back on the road on Wednesday for a meeting with the Lions of Florida Memorial. Ave Maria swept the season series from FMU last season, winning both matches in straight sets. Opening serve from Miami Gardens is slated for 7:00 p.m.
