AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's Soccer team got their first win of the 2025 season Saturday afternoon, taking down the Warner Royals 5-1. The Gyrenes' offense was powered by a hat trick from Mateo Rolon, the first of his career.
Both teams were active offensively, with 44 shots combined between the two squads, but it was Ave Maria who was finding the back of the net.
Rolon opened the scoring in the 21
st minute, connecting on a free kick following a Warner foul. The sophomore from Argentina bent the ball perfectly around the wall and it hooked in near the right post for his first goal of the season.
Just two minutes later, Rolon found himself back on the scoresheet. Hayden Wysocki crossed the ball to him in the box and Rolon jumped up and headed the feed towards the goal. The ball clanged off the post but wound right back at the feet of Rolon, who shot it once again on goal. The Warner goalkeeper got a finger on the ball but did not get enough to slow its momentum as it slowly trickled over the line for the second goal of the game.
Neither team found the back of the net for the rest of the half as the Gyrenes took a 2-0 lead into the break.
Rolon completed the hat trick in the 49
th minute. After receiving a throw in, Rolon fired a shot from about 28 yards out that snuck in under the crossbar for his third goal of the game. With the three goals, Rolon recorded the first hat trick for the Gyrenes in three years to the day. The last Gyrene to net three goals in one game was Josh Gaeng on September 6, 2022, against Florida College.
Warner scored their lone goal in the 67
th minute, getting back within two of the Gyrenes.
Ave Maria extended their lead back to three just four minutes later when Jael Parraga struck for his second goal of the season.
The scoring was done yet as Sava Cadjenovic snuck the final goal of the match in with a little over 10 minutes left to play. It was his first goal of the season.
In net, Andrija Vujakovic put together a strong performance, stopping nine of the 10 shots he faced. Nine saves is a season high for the sophomore keeper and the most since he has recorded since October 19, 2024.
With their first win of the season, Ave Maria improves to 1-2-1 on the year. Saturday's game was a non-conference match against the Warner Royals and does not count towards league. Tehe Gyrenes will see the Royals again on October 11 in Lake Wales.
The win was also Ave Maria's 50
th win as a program and the first ever win under new head coach Dariel Collazo.
The Gyrenes are on the road for the rest of September as they make a trip to Texas and then around Florida. Ave Maria will play three straight games in the Lone Star State, starting a match Thursday, September 11, against Texas College. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. and the match will be streamed live by Texas College.
