Women’s Soccer Draws with Webber

BABSON PARK, Fla. — For the third match in a row, the Ave Maria Women's Soccer team found themselves even with their opponent after 90 minutes of play. The Gyrenes now have four points in the conference standings but are still looking for that first league win of the season as they tied the Webber Warriors 0-0.

The Gyrenes went on the offensive to start the match and recorded four shots within the first 15 minutes. Two of the four shots were saved, and one even hit the post. Although Ave Maria could not find the back of the net, their defense stopped any chances of the Warriors scoring. Emma Schweitzer was a wall in the first half, recording three saves. AMU's final offensive opportunity of the frame came from Cydnee Butler in the 44th minute but could not find the net as the Gyrenes and Warriors headed into the second half tied 0-0.

Ave Maria had two chances to start the second half of the match, with shots coming from Melton in the 46th minute and Arianna Sebion Calvesio in the 50th minute. However, both were stopped by the Webber goalkeeper. Schweitzer stayed strong as she recorded another save in the 51st minute, keeping the game tied. Schweitzer was a stone wall throughout the entire match, totaling nine saves in the match, including back-to-back saves in the 82nd minute, which kept the match tied. Conforti had another chance at the net in the 88th minute, but the shot was blocked. In the end, Ave Maria could not score, as the match ended in a scoreless tie, 0-0.

With her nine saves, Schweitzer records her school-record 13th shutout of the season.

With the tie, Ave Maria goes to 3-5-6 overall and 0-3-4 in conference play. Six draws are the most ties in a single season in program history.

Depending on what happens in the Sun Conference across the next week will determine whether Ave Maria's Sun Conference hopes are still alive heading into the final date of the regular season. The Gyrenes have four points in the standings and are just one point behind the SCAD Bees who are in sixth place. However, the Bees have played three fewer games than the Gyrenes. Two of those games will be played Thursday and Saturday and will determine if the Gyrenes can still vie for a playoff spot in their regular season finale.

That finale is set for Tuesday, October 27, as the Gyrenes play host to the New College of Florida Mighty Banyans. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. and the match will be streamed live on the Sun Digital Network.
