WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's soccer team kept the Keiser Seahawks off the scoreboard for the first 39 minutes of the match but couldn't close the flood gates after the first goal was scored as they fell 5-1.
Ave Maria's defense held strong for the majority of the first half. Keiser had several opportunities on goal in the first half, but goalkeeper Andrija Vujakovic came up with three saves in the first half, coming in the 10
th minute, the 14
th minute, and the 22
nd minute.
In the 40
th minute, the Seahawks broke through and scored their first goal of the match. Keiser quickly doubled their lead in the 41
st minute with a penalty kick that gave the Seahawks a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, Ave Maria could not recover as the Seahawks continued their attack on the net. Keiser found the back of the net three more times, in the 69
th, 71
st and the 75
th minutes.
The Gyrenes did end on a positive note as Mateo Rolon found the back of the net in the 82
nd minute. After back-to-back shutouts to start conference play, it was Ave Maria's first goal since September 25.
With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 6-7 overall and 0-3 in Sun Conference play. Ave Maria is back at home for their next match and will look to snap their losing streak Saturday, October 10. The Gyrenes will host the Warner Royals who are 0-1-1 heading into their Wednesday match with the Florida Memorial Lions. The game will be streamed live on the Sun Digital Network.
