AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Beach Volleyball team notched two impressive wins Friday as they took down RV William Carey and No. 6 Mobile. The Gyrenes made quick work of William Carey with a 4-1 win and then followed it up with a nail-biting 3-2 win over Mobile.

The morning got started with the Gyrenes taking the Wiliam Carey Crusaders. The even number flights got the match started with Ava Winkler and Adriana Bravo in the second position and Maria Teixeira and Beatriz Rissi in the fourth position.

Winkler and Bravo were the first pair to win, taking both sets 21-12 and 21-9. It was the first win of the season for Winkler and Bravo as they started their year with a loss to Warner.

Teixeira and Rissi needed a third set in their flight but turned in a win to score Ave Maria their second point of the match. The pair dropped the first set 23-21 but then came back to win the second set 21-15 and the tiebreaking third set 15-4.

The odd numbered flights started following the three-set win and continued AMU's dominance. In the fifth flight, Abbey Grose and Maylis DeTar took care of their Crusader counterparts in two sets, winning 21-14 and 21-15. The win clinched the match for the Gyrenes as they had won three of the five points.

William Carey scored their lone point in the first flight as Ryan Getz and Ines Lopes fell in three sets. Getz and Lopes won the second set convincingly 21-9 to force a tiebreaking third set. The final frame was back in forth but unfortunately went the Crusaders' way as they won 15-13.

In the final flight of the match, Ave Maria tacked on one more point with Elle Malczewski and Greta Heiney winning 21-14, 21-18 in a two-set sweep.

Following the win over William Carey, Ave Maria started up against their toughest opponent of the year so far: No. 6 Mobile.

The Rams scored the opening point of the match with a two set win in the second flight. Winkler and Bravo put up a fight, but fell 21-13, 21-14 in Mobile's first win. With their split, Winkler and Bravo are 1-2 in 2026.

The Gyrenes got the point back in a hard fought three sets in the fourth flight. The first set for Teixeira and Rissi was the highest scoring set of the day in either match for the Gyrenes. However, the pair fell 26-24. In the second set, the two battled back and won 21-14 to even the flight. The final frame was another close battle, but Rissi served the last three points as the Gyrenes won 15-12 and even up the total match score. With the two wins on the day, Teixeira and Rissi are 3-0 on the season.

Mobile came right back in the top flight with a 21-14, 21-13 win. Getz and Lopes put up a good fight but went 0-2 in the doubleheader and fall to 1-2 on the year.

Just like in the fourth flight, Ave Maria fought back and won another three-set flight this time with the fifth pair. Grose and DeTar won the first set 21-17 but dropped the second set 21-18. In the third set, the Gyrenes went on roll winning six points in a row to take a 13-7 lead. Mobile fought back with a 6-1 run and made it 14-13, but Grose and DeTar got the final point to win the flight and clinch the point for the Gyrenes. With their two wins, Grose and DeTar improve to 3-0 on the year.

The match came down to the final pair in the third flight. The buildup was high, but Heiney and Malczewski took care of business, winning 21-15, 21-19. Mobile had a late lead in the second set, but three straight points from Gyrenes closed out the match. With their two wins, Heiney and Malczewski improve to 2-1 on the year.

With the doubleheader sweep, Ave Maria is 3-0 to start the 2026 campaign and now has some big, ranked wins under their belt.

The Gyrenes are back in the sand. March 4, when the Barry Buccaneers come town. The match is set to start at 3 p.m.
