MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. — The Ave Maria Softball team opened their series with the St. Thomas Bobcats Friday, falling 7-0.
St. Thomas opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first, which was their highest scoring frame of the game. Three walks loaded the bases for St. Thomas, and a triple brought them all home.
The Bobcats added another run in the second, fourth and two runs in the sixth to get their seven runs.
In the first five innings, the Gyrenes logged at least one hit per frame and put pressure on the Bobcat defense. Unfortunately, Ave Maria could not bring any of them home as seven runners were left stranded on the base paths.
Karsyn Moore and Genevieve Peterson were the two Gyrenes to log multi-hit games as both players knocked two singles.
In the circle, freshman Noelani Sokolik made her fifth start of the season, tossing first two innings while allowing four runs off two hits. Lindsey Watson cleaned up the remaining four innings and allowed three runs off six hits. Both pitchers logged one strikeout.
With the loss, the record for the Gyrenes falls to 4-15 overall and 0-7 in the conference.
The Gyrenes and Bobcats continue their Sun Conference series with a double header on March 21st. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the second game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed on the Urban Edge Network.
