AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Beach Volleyball team kept the winning streak alive Wednesday afternoon as they swept a doubleheader against the NCAA Division I Barry Buccaneers. Ave Maria won the first match 5-0 and the second 4-1.
Before the match, the NAIA released its latest Top 10 poll and the Gyrenes shot up the ranks, going from unranked to No. 7 in the country. Fueled by the recognition from the NAIA, the Gyrenes took to the sand and dominated the Buccaneers.
In the first game, Ave Maria won all five flights for a clean sweep victory.
Ava Winkler and Adriana Bravo were the first to finish, winning the second flight 21-9, 21-9. The pair allowed the least amount of points from the Buccaneers in the first match and tied for the quickest flight at just 32 minutes of play time.
Abbey Grose and Maylis DeTar were the next to finish with a 25-23, 23-21 win in the fifth flight. Both sets needed extra points, but Grose and DeTar got the job done with some clutch points.
Maria Teixeira and Beatriz Rissi took the fourth flight in three sets. The freshman and redshirt senior dropped their opening set 18-21 but came back to win 21-14 and 15-9 to win the clinching point of the match.
Having won the first three flights, the final two were just icing on the cake as Ave Maria got their first 5-0 sweep of the season.
Ryan Getz and Ines Lopes took the top flight 21-13, 21-15 against the top two players from Barry. The two tied Winkler and Bravo for quickest flight of the match at 32 minutes of play time.

The second match of the doubleheader finished in almost the exact same order, but with the fourth and fifth flights switched.
Winkler and Bravo were the first to win, taking the second flight 21-15, 21-13. With the two wins on Wednesday, Winkler and Bravo move over .500 and improve to 3-2 on the year.
The fourth flight was the next to finish and was the only flight the Gyrenes lost all day. Teixeira and Rissi fell 18-21, 17-21. It was their first loss of the season and are now 4-1 on the year.
The Gyrenes got that point back in the fifth flight as Grose and DeTar won 21-19, 22-20. The doubleheader sweep for the pair improved their record to 5-0 in the fifth slot on the sheet.
The clinching point of the match was won by Getz and Lopes in the top flight, winning 21-8, 21-14. Getz and Lopes allowed the fewest points and recorded the quickest flight against the Buccaneers' top pair. Like Winkler and Bravo, their doubleheader sweep put Getz and Lopes over .500 for the year at 3-2.
