Women’s Tennis Falls in Final UTSA Match

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Ave Maria women's tennis team concluded their stay at the UTSA campus in Orlando Thursday afternoon, playing their fourth match in four days. Unfortunately, the finale did not go the Gyrenes' way as they fell to the Michigan Tech Huskies 7-0.

Michigan Tech scored the first point of the match in the doubles round, winning both pairings that played. The second pairing was the first to finish with a score of 6-1, followed by the top pairing with a score of 6-4.

In the singles round, Ave Maria played with just five players, forfeiting the sixth slot which put the Huskies up 2-0.

The five matches that did play all ended in two sets in favor of the Huskies.

Clara Penido won the most games among the Gyrenes with a total of 10 as she fell 6-4, 7-6. Elizabeth Pince won the second most at five games over two sets, falling 6-4, 6-1.

With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 1-4 on the year and ends their time in the Theme Park Capital of the World with a record of 1-3.

The Gyrenes are back in action Thursday, March 12, as they take on the Oakland City Mighty Oaks in a neutral site contest in Lakeland, Florida. It will be the first ever meeting between the two squads on the tennis court.
