MIRAMAR, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Track and Field team won the HBCU Relays Experience Saturday, April 11, while the men's team finished second. Combined, the Gyrenes won three individual events as they had a strong showing in their final meet of the regular season.
On the women's side, Juliette Nichols won the 400 meter hurdles race with a time of 1:09.63. Clare Fico finished just four hundredths of a second behind her in second place.
On the men's side, Donavan Mattson won the 1500 meters with a time of 4:00.27. The other individual win went to David Giles in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Giles finished with a time of 9:59.84. John Halvorsen finished right behind in second place with a time of 10:01:55.
The women had five other athletes place in the top three in other events. As a team in the relay races, the Gyrene women finished second in both the 4x100 meter relay and the 4x200 meter relay.
The men had six other athletes place in the top three in other events. As a team, the men finished second all three relay races: the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800.
The HBCU Relays Experience concludes the regular season for the Gyrenes as they now shift their focus to the Sun Conference Championships, which are in Lakeland, Florida, April 25-26.
