BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Due to a strange set of circumstances, the Ave Maria Women's Tennis team qualified for the Sun Conference Tournament for the fourth year in row. The Gyrenes opened their postseason play Wednesday morning against the SCAD Bees, falling in the quarterfinals 4-0.
SCAD won the opening doubles point to take an early lead in the match. The Bees took the third position by forfeit from the Gyrenes and then won the second position 6-2. In the top position, Maria Hofmeister and Mariangel Nunez were tied 3-3 with their SCAD counterparts when the round was called.
In the singles round, Ave Maria had to forfeit the bottom two positions giving the Bees a 3-0 lead.
SCAD won the clinching point in the fourth position 6-3, 6-0.
Hofmeister won the most games among the four Gyrenes, playing to a 6-6 tie in the first set when the match was called. Elizabeth Pince won the second-most games with four across two sets in the second position.
With the loss, Ave Maria is knocked out of the Sun Conference tournament. The Gyrenes finish 2026 with a 2-14 record.
