AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Soccer team squared off on the pitch against the St. Thomas Bobcats on Tuesday night. Both teams were able to push the ball down the field, but it was only the Bobcats who were able to find the back of the net as they defeated the Gyrenes 3-0.
The first half was a defensive battle for both sides early on. With only three shots recorded in the first twenty minutes, both teams were trying to break the tie.
Finally, in the 21
st minute, St. Thomas found the back of the net and broke the tie.
Ave Maria was able to put together two shots in the 23
rd and 24
th minute, but none were able to find the net. At the end of the first half, the Gyrenes trailed 1-0.
In the second half, the Gyrenes defense could not hold up from St. Thomas. In the 50
th minute, the Gyrenes committed an untimely penalty, which led to St. Thomas extending their lead 2-0.
Ave Maria tried to respond with a shot of their own in the 53
rd minute, but it was saved by the St. Thomas goalkeeper.
The Bobcats scored again in the second half and would maintain their lead for the rest of the period to win 3-0.
Despite the three goals allowed, senior keeper Emma Schweitezer made four saves.
With the loss, the Gyrenes fall to 3-2-1 on the year. Even though St. Thomas is in the Sun Conference along with Ave Maria, the match was not counted as a conference game. The Sun Conference slate begins Wednesday, September 30.
The Gyrenes are on the road for their next match. It is their final non-conference match of the season. However, like Tuesday, Ave Maria will take on a Sun Conference foe in a sort of preview match. AMU travels to Miami Gardens Friday afternoon as they take on the Florida Memorial Lions. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the Sun Digital Network.
