Women’s Soccer Falls to Fire

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Soccer team matched up with the No. 14 Southeastern Fire Wednesday evening and held their own for the first 40 minutes of the match. Southeastern netted a late goal in the first half and then stroke three more times in the second to win 4-0.

The first 40 minutes of the match was very even between the two teams. The Gyrenes actually had more shots on goal than Southeastern with chances coming from Arianna Sebion Calvesio, Catherine Dalton and Madeline Barker.

Goalkeeper Emma Schweitzer stopped the first shot she faced in the first half, and then the Gyrene defense helped her out with a save of their own in the 28th minute to keep it a scoreless game.
In the 43rd minute, the Fire found the back of the net for the match's first goal.

Ave Maria registered one more shot on goal from Sarah Humphries, but it was turned away by the Southeastern keeper like the three before it. When the two teams went into the break, Southeastern was up 1-0.

The Fire pulled away from the Gyrenes with three second half goals. The first of which came just one minute and 44 seconds into the frame.

Southeastern scored again in the 74th and 76th minutes to take a 4-0 lead.

Ave Maria played back for the entire second half, logging on just one shot. It was off the boot of Claire Wrobleski and would have brought the Gyrenes back within one goal in the 50th minute, but it clanged off the crossbar. AMU was held empty for the rest of the match.

With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 3-3-2 on the year and starts conference play with a 0-1 record.

The Gyrenes are on the road for their next match as they travel across the state to Miami Gardens to take on the St. Thomas Bobcats. The Bobcats fell to the Florida Memorial Lions Wednesday and remain winless in conference play at 0-2. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and the match will be streamed live on the Sun Digital Network.
