CUTHBERT, Ga.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team continued their run of shutouts on Saturday afternoon, moving to 5-1 with a 2-0 victory over Andrew College in Cuthbert, Georgia. The win marked Ave Maria's fourth consecutive victory, three of which have been shutouts. AMU's five non-conference wins ties a school record set last season.
What proved to be the game-winning goal came in the 23rd minute, when Karl Sri found the back of the net on an assist from Sava Cadjenovic. The goal was the second of the season for Sri, who also scored in Ave Maria's home victory over South Florida Bible College. The Gyrenes added two more shots on goal in the first half, but could not find the back of the net, heading into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
Just minutes into the second half, the Gyrenes found their insurance goal. Mateo Rolon resumed his place as Ave Maria's leading scorer, scoring his third goal of the season in the 47th minute. Rolon has now scored a goal in three straight games in the current AMU winning streak, scoring once against Pensacola Christian and scoring once and assisting on another against South Florida Bible.
The Ave Maria defense shut down Andrew College in the 2-0 victory, allowing just two shots, neither of which challenged goalkeeper Andrija Vujakovic. It was Vujakovic's third shutout of the season, extending his Ave Maria record to eight career shutouts. In total, Ave Maria outshot Andrew by an 11-2 margin, and the Gyrenes were responsible for each of the match's seven shots on goal.
Ave Maria will look for a program-record sixth non-conference victory on Monday, as their journey in the Peach State continues. The Gyrenes will battle former Sun Conference foe Thomas University in Thomasville, Georgia. The Night Hawks enter the match with a 3-2 record, including wins over Sun Conference foes Warner and Webber. Kickoff from Thomasville is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
