Defensive Line coach Mark Green is entering his fourth season with Ave Maria University. This is his third year coaching the Defensive Line. Ave Maria recorded their first ever win during Coach Green's first year at AMU.
Coach Green served as the running backs coach at Johns Hopkins in 2003 before returning in 2008 to coach the defensive line. Johns Hopkins compiled a 36-10 record with three Centennial Conference Championships, one trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals and a pair of ECAC Championships during Green's four seasons at Homewood.
Green's defensive line was dominant during the 2009 season as the Blue Jays finished in the top 30 in the nation in rushing defense, total defense and scoring defense. Hopkins forced two or more turnovers in all 13 games, amassed 38 sacks and produced a pair of First Team All-Centennial performers in Glenn Rocca and Steve Levinson. The Blue Jays posted a 10-3 record, won the Centennial Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2009.
Working with a line that counted just one senior in the regular two-deep in 2008, Green developed a unit that allowed just 114.8 rushing yards per game and seven rushing touchdowns. Under similar personnel circumstances in 2010, Green's unit turned in another strong showing as JHU allowed just 94.3 rushing yards per game and nine rushing touchdowns on the year.
Green was previously a member of the most successful season in Johns Hopkins football history (at the time - 2003) as the Blue Jays rolled up a then school-record 10 wins, claimed a share of the Centennial Conference Championship and won the ECAC South Atlantic Championship. With Green coaching the running backs, the Blue Jays averaged 199.7 rushing yards per game and accumulated 19 rushing touchdowns that season.
Green has an extensive high school coaching background. He served as an assistant coach at Paint Branch (MD) High School from 1981-97 and helped guide the team to state playoff appearances in 1989 and 1991. He spent 10 years as the defensive coordinator at Paint Branch and also coached for three seasons at River Hill (MD) High School. He helped guide River Hill to a 15-5 record and a runner-up finish in the county in his last two years there.
Green earned his degree in industrial arts education from the University of Maryland in 1979. He began his college playing career at Salisbury before transferring to Maryland, where he walked on to the football team. He was a member of the Terps' 1977 ACC Championship team. He currently resides in Marco Island.
