Ron Tyner begins his first season with the Gyrenes in 2015. Tyner will serve as the Offensive Line Coach.
Tyner comes to Ave Maria University from Division 1 FCS member Bryant University in Rhode Island. Tyner served as the Bulldogs Offensive Line Coach for the last two seasons. Under his watch, the Bryant offensive line saw a dramatic improvement. Prior to Tyner’s arrival the bulldogs ranked 8th in the NEC in rushing offense (129 ypg), by his second season Bryant ranked 1st in the NEC in rushing offense (200 ypg). Prior to his arrival the bulldogs ranked last in the NEC in sacks against (24), by his second season Bryant ranked 2nd in the NEC in sacks against (7).
In 2014, the Bulldogs' offensive line produced the top rushing offense in the NEC and also helped the Bulldogs lead the NEC in Total Offense. Bryant averaged nearly 200 yards per game on the ground and 402 yards per game of total offense. The Bulldogs set the Bryant record for wins in a season. Tyner also coached two more All-NEC offensive linemen as senior Abe M'Bodj and sophomore George Smith both were named to the first team.
In his first season, Tyner coached a pair of All-NEC offensive linemen in seniors Charles Argast and Doug Flink. The two helped the Bulldogs average 193 passing yards, 143 rushing yards and 336 yards of total offense per game.
Tyner came to Bryant after spending the previous five seasons (2008-2012) at Elmhurst College. At Elmhurst, Tyner served as the running backs coach (2009), tackles and tight ends coach (2010) and was the run game coordinator / offensive line coach his final three seasons (2010-2012). Numerous individuals thrived under his tutelage. Under Tyner, seven linemen were All-CCIW, four were All-North Region, two were All-Americans and two were selected to the Division III All-Star game. Tyner’s tight ends earned three All-CCIW and one All-North Region honor, and his running backs earned three All-CCIW honors, two All-North Region selections, one All-American recognition and the 2012 Gagliardi Trophy (DIII version of the Heisman Trophy).
Over his last two seasons, Tyner helped Elmhurst post the top offense and running offense in the CCIW. In 2011, Elmhurst led the CCIW with 454 yards per game and finished 15th in the country. In 2012, Elmhurst led the CCIW with 236 rushing yards per game, and finished 20th in the country in rushing offense. Elmhurst also led the CCIW in sacks against (.57 per game), and finished 24th in the country in sacks against (.92 per game). The 2012 squad finished 10-2, set the Elmhurst record for wins in a season, won the CCIW championship, secured a bid to the NCAA tournament, and finished ranked eighth in the country.

Prior to his stint at Elmhurst, Tyner was a four-year starter at Saint Joseph’s College in Indiana and Olivet College in Michigan. Earned All-IFA honors on the offensive line in his lone season at Saint Joe’s and then helped Olivet to the 2007 MIAA title and an appearance in the NCAA tournament.
Tyner earned his bachelor’s degree in sports and recreation management in Olivet in 2008.Â
Tyner and his wife Emily have one son, Tucker. Emily serves as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Ave Maria. They reside in Ave Maria.Â
