Football Travels To Apprentice School To Wrap Up Regular Season

The Ave Maria University football team will wrap up its 2013 regular season on Saturday afternoon when they take on Apprentice School in Newport News, Va. The Gyrenes currently stand at 7-2 and are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Football Coaches Poll.
 
Coming off a 56-19 rout of Point University (Ga.), the Gyrenes have won seven straight games to improve to 7-2 on the season.
 
Over the last seven games, Ave Maria has averaged 43.0 points per game while allowing just over 17 points a game and the Gyrene defense has taken the ball away 25 times (15 interceptions and 10 fumbles).
 
Against Point (Ga.), Clayton Uecker went 28-for-43 for 336 yards, no interception and four touchdown passes. Thirteen different wide receivers caught a pass in the win.
 
Scott Jones finished with nine rushes for 42 yards and three touchdowns for the Blue and Green. Dan Mervos, Travis Makauskas, Dayshaun Womble and Richard Shockley each had touchdown receptions.
 
The Gyrenes played a near perfect first half, scoring a touchdown on six of their eight first half drives.
 
SCOUTING APPRENTICE SCHOOL
 
Apprentice School comes into Saturday's match-up with a 1-8 overall record and on a four game losing streak. Two of the Builders' loses have come against opponents that Ave Maria has defeated in Edward Waters (L, 38-21) and Webber International (L, 46-7).
 
The Builders are averaging 18 points a game while allowing nearly 42 points to their opponents. So far this season, opponents have had a big advantage on the ground against Apprentice. The Builders are allowing over five yards a carry compared to their 2.2 yards per carry. Apprentice has allowed 31 touchdowns on the ground compared to 16 through the air.
 
Jonathan Whelan will get the start at quarterback for the Builders. Whelan has completed 48.9 percent of his passes this season for 1,509 yards and 13 touchdowns with 16 interceptions. Chase Donahue is to leading rusher for Apprentice School with 475 yards on 39 carries and four touchdowns.
