Despite Strong Start, Gyrenes Fall Short In Season Debut

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Ave Maria Football team opened the 2013 campaign on Saturday versus the Eagles of Robert Morris University. Despite a strong start,
the Gyrenes fell at the hands of the Eagles 34-20 at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill.

AMU scored a touchdown on its first drive of the game when
Clayton Uecker hit Richard Shockley  for a 44-yard touchdown pass to cap off a five-play, 66-
yard drive.  The Gyrenes struck again late in the quarter as they marched down the field on a 14-play, 76 yard drive that saw
Uecker hit Chris Fahey on a six-
yard TD pass.  The Gyrenes missed the point after and led 13-0 with 1:08 left to play in the first quarter.

The Eagles would then answer back on their next possession, putting together a drive of their own covering 70 yards in 11 plays.  Matt Westerkamp connected with
Deshawn Weaver on a 20-yard pass play to cut the Gyrene lead to 13-7.  RMU was not done, scoring two more touchdowns before the half withWesterkamp
and Lamont Wims joining up on a 37-yard touchdown reception. Westerkamp proceeded to close out the half hitting Sean Zingsheim in the end zone on a
34-yard toss as time expired.  The Eagles missed the PAT and the Gyrenes would trail 20-13 heading into the locker room.

Ave Maria returned with a vengeance and scored on its first drive of the second half.  Quarterback
Clayton Uecker connected with Travis Makauskas on an
eight-yard pass to end a nine-play, 75-yard drive to tie the game at 20-20. The Eagle defense would stymie the Gyrene attack for the remainder of the game.

AMU quarterback
Clayton Uecker had a solid collegiate debut throwing for 346 yards and three touchdowns. Ricardo Collier led the receiving core with
nine catches for 135 yards. Laz Herrera tallied 10 carries for 33 yards.
