Ave Maria Drops 3-2 Decision In Double Overtime

AVE MARIA, Fla.--- It took 108 minutes to settle Thursday's TSC matchup between the Ave Maria Lady Gyrenes and the Florida Memorial Lions. The visiting Lions converted their third goal of the match with 2:32 remaining in the second overtime to walk away with a hard fought 3-2 victory. AMU will next play this Saturday, when they take on the Saint Thomas University Bobcats in a TSC battle.

Defense ruled early as both squads were able to keep each other off the scoreboard for the first 32 minutes. The visiting Lions were able to breakthrough first, converting on an odd man break away to take a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Gyrenes would come out swinging to begin the second half, notching the game tying goal just six minutes into the second half. Junior Victoria Johnson took a Carlie Frullo pass and banked in a shot off the post to beat the Lions goalie to tie the game up at one. The goal by Johnson was her first of the 2014 season.

The Lions would jump back ahead converting on their second goal of the afternoon, 19 minutes into the second half.

Florida Memorial would cling to their 2-1 lead, for the next 15 minutes, before Ave Maria would notch the game tying goal. Freshman Anna Organvidez converted on an errant FMU clear, finding the back of the net from 45 yards, tying the game at two.

The defenses would not surrender another goal through regulation and the first overtime.

With just two minutes and 32 seconds left to play, the Lions beat the Ave Maria defense and converted the game winning goal, securing the 3-2 victory.

Goalkeeper Francesca Singleton tallied nine saves in net for the Lady Gyrenes. With the loss AMU drops its record to 3-7 and 0-5 in the Sun Conference.

The Lady Gyrenes will return to action this weekend, when they play host to Saint Thomas University. The match between the Blue and Green and the Bobcats is slated for 4:30 pm at the North Park Athletic Complex on the campus of Ave Maria University.
