Gyrenes Score In Final Seconds To Defeat Point

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria football team scored a touchdown as time expired and converted the extra point to cap a 20-point, fourth quarter comeback to defeat Point (Ga.) 42-41 on Saturday afternoon. 

Clayton Uecker accounted for six touchdowns on the afternoon for AMU. He completed 36-of-48 passes for 483 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. He also ran for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Senior wide receiver Chris Fahey finished with four receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on touchdowns of 22 and 66 yards. Johntavis Brown caught a team-high 10 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown. Travis Makauskas had eight receptions for 107 yards. Ricardo Collier caught the other touchdown pass from Uecker.

On the defensive end, Kurt Joseph's 10 total tackles led the Gyrenes. Reigning Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Charles Williams, had six total tackles to go along with two tackles for a loss and one sack. Anfernee Martin finished with two solo tackles and a blocked extra point.

The Gyrenes came out firing, taking their opening possession 91-yards highlighted by a 22-yard touchdown pass from Uecker to Fahey.

Point, however, scored the games next 27 points with the extra point on their fourth touchdown being blocked by Martin. The teams then exchanged touchdowns late in the first half to make the score 34-14 in favor of Point at the break.

The Blue and Green again started the second half with a bang when Uecker found Fahey for a 66-yard pass and catch touchdown. Point added a score late in the third quarter to put the Gyrenes behind 41-21 entering the fourth quarter. 

Johntavis Brown got the fourth quarter started with a 10-yard touchdown reception from Uecker to cut the deficit to 13. A few minutes later, Uecker found pay dirt on a three yard touchdown run to make the score 41-35.

After forcing the Skyhawks to punt with 1:32 remaining, the Gyrenes drove 91 yards in 11 plays, capped by a four-yard touchdown pass from Uecker to Brown as time expired to make the score 41-all. The extra point by Brandon Leon put the Blue and Green ahead 42-41.

The Gyrenes finished with 585 total yards compared to 449 from Point. 

Ave Maria will return to the field on Saturday, November 15, when they welcome Apprentive School to AMU Football Field. The game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, Ave Maria will honor the 23 football seniors.
