AVE MARIA, Fla.—The Gyrenes men's soccer team opened their 2014 season with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Concordia College (Ala.) The visiting Hornets used three first half goals to pull away and secure their victory.
The two squads played to a scoreless tie through the first 21 minutes before the Hornets were able to break through and take a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Concordia was able to get back on the board, after a successful penalty kick. Still holding onto the 2-0 lead, the Hornets converted on a corner kick, stretching their lead to three in the 35th minute.
The Ave Maria offense tallied 12 shots, with two apiece coming from Resam Moghimi and AJ Flagg. Senior goalkeeper J.C. Intriago played a scoreless second half in net for the host Gyrenes.
The Blue and Green return to the pitch on September 10, when they travel to Ft. Lauderdale to take on Division II opponent Nova Southeastern. In their matchup last season, the Gyrenes were defeated 1-0 by the visiting Sharks.
