Gyrenes Fall On The Road To Nova Southeastern

AVE MARIA, Fla.—The early offense of the host Nova Southeastern University Sharks proved to be too much for the Ave Maria Gyrenes to overcome as they were defeated 6-2 in Wednesday night's contest.

The Blue and Green were able to get themselves on the scoreboard in the 64th minute, when freshman Alejandro Echeverria beat the Sharks goalkeeper for his first goal of the season. Echeverria's goal was assisted by another freshman, Alvaro Gomez-Garcia (Guayaquil, Ecuador).

With the score now set at 5-1, the AMU offense continued to battle, tallying their second goal of the evening ten minutes later. Midfielder Dan Lomady (Willow Grove, Pa.) fed freshman Juan Carlos Bucaram (Guayaquil, Ecuador) at the top of the box, where he was able to blast a shot to the top corner to beat the NSU goalkeeper.

The two goals that the Gyrenes recorded were the first two goals surrendered by the Nova Southeastern defense this season. The Sharks, who currently sit in second place in the Sunshine State (NCAA DII) had shutout their previous two opponents.

With the loss, the Blue and Green drop their record to 0-2 on the young season.

Ave Maria will be back in action this Saturday, September 13, when they take on Trinity College (Fla.). This will be the first of two consecutive games between the Gyrenes and the Tigers of Trinity College. Kickoff for this non-conference matchup is set for 4 p.m. at the AMU Soccer Field.
