ATLANTA, Ga.—The Lady Gyrenes scored two unanswered goals to comeback and defeat host Oglethorpe University on Saturday afternoon 2-1. With the win, the Blue and Green bring their 2014 record to 2-0. The victory was also the second consecutive win over an NCAA affiliated opponent for AMU.
The Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe got the scoring started, knocking in the first goal of the contest midway through the first half.
Eight minutes later, with AMU still trailing 1-0, Sophomore
Anne Bateman (Waymart, Pa.) was able to beat the Oglethorpe keeper to tie the contest at one. The goal was Bateman's second in as many days.
The two squads went to the half tied at one and looked destined to take their match into overtime. With just two minutes remaining, freshman
Anna Organvidez (Miami, Fla.) converted on a free kick from 20 yards out to give the Blue and Green a 2-1 lead and a victory. Organvidez's goal was the first of her career and gave the Gyrenes a 2-0 start to the 2014 season.
The Lady Gyrenes were able to walk away with a victory, despite being outshot 17-12 by the Stormy Petrels.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Francesca Singleton (Manchester, United Kingdom) turned away six of the seven shots she faced in goal to anchor the AMU defense.
The Blue and Green will return to action on September 9, when they travel to Temple Terrace, Fla., to take on the Falcons of Florida College. Ave Maria and Florida College last played in 2011, with their match ending in a draw.
