WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team picked up their first win of the season Saturday morning when they defeated Edward Waters College in straight sets at the Northwood Labor Day Volleyfest in West Palm Beach.
 
The Lady Gyrenes (2-1, 0-0 TSC) will take on host Northwood (4-0, 0-0 TSC) in their second and final match of the day at 2 p.m. Live video of the match will be available and the link can be found on AveMariaGyrenes.com.
 
Lexy Smith (Manassas, Va.) led AMU with 13 kills and a .370 hitting percentage. Lexie Andric (Tallahassee, Fla.) also recorded double digit kills with 10 and hit at a .409 clip.
 
Jessica Schein (Greenfield, Wisc.) led the Blue and Green in assists with 27 while Mary Eckard (Milford, Iowa) tallied the most digs with 25.
 
The Lady Gyrenes got off to a slow start, falling behind 10-2 in the opening set, but AMU won 11 of 15 points in the middle of the match to pull within one at 16-15.  Trailing by three, 19-16, AMU won the next six points to take their first lead of the match. Ave Maria would go on to win the set 28-26.
 
Large runs to start the second (16-4) and third sets (16-6) allowed the Lady Gyrenes to cruise to 25-11 and 25-9 set wins, respectively, to complete the sweep.
