Lady Gyrenes Fall In Three Set Battle

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team suffered a hard-fought three set loss on Tuesday night, falling to Southeastern University 26-28, 27-29, 15-25. AMU had four set points in the first two sets but the Blue and Green were unable to convert.

Hannah Wurster (Conestoga, Pa.) led the Lady Gyrenes with 12 kills on the night while hitting at a .500 clip. Jessica Schein's (Greenfield, Wisc.) 31 assists and Mary Eckard's (Milford, Iowa) 11 digs were each team highs.

AMU jumped out to a 6-1 advantage in the opening set but Southeastern was able to chip away at the Lady Gyrenes lead and eventually pull even at 18-all. The teams went back-and-forth the remainder of the set with neither team able to get more than a point lead.

Ave Maria had the first chance at the set with a set point at 24-23 but a service error halted the Gyrenes chance. AMU held off two Southeastern set points but weren't able to hold off a third, as SEU took the opening set 28-26.

Neither team was able to make a run early in the second set with the teams staying within a couple points of each other until late in the set when SEU made a run to take a 24-20 lead. The Lady Gyrnes responded by winning the next five points to give AMU a set point at 25-24.

A serving error again proved costly for the Gyrenes but AMU was able to get another shot at the set with a side out at 25-all. A kill by Southeastern prevented to the Blue and Green from taking advantage of the second set point.

After a kill by Wurster gave AMU its third set point, Southeaster again came up with a kill to prevent the Lady Gyrenes from evening up the match at a set apiece. The Lady Fire took the next two points to take the set 29-27.

Southeastern used the momentum of the first two sets to pull ahead early in the third en route to a 25-15 set three win.

AMU returns to action on Thursday when they host Florida College at 7 p.m.
