MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-11, 25-18, 25-19) to St. Thomas on Tuesday night in Miami Gardens. The Lady Gyrenes return to action on Thursday night when they host Trinity College at 5 p.m.
Lexy Smith led AMU with 11 kills and hit at a team-best .429 clip. Jessica Schein recorded 25 assists while Mary Eckard tallied 14 digs.
St Thomas broke open a 7-4 lead in the first set with a 10 point run to take a 17-4 lead en route to a 25-11 first set win.
The Lady Gyrenes kept within striking distance of the conference leading Bobcats in the second set, trailing by one point, 17-16, late in the set. STU then went on a 8-2 run to take the second set 25-18.
AMU jumped out to a 6-5 lead in the third set but weren't able to hold of St. Thomas, who scored nine of the next 11 points to take a 14-8 lead. The Lady Bobcats went on to take the third set 25-19.
The Blue and Green return to Tom Golisano Field House on Thursday night to take on Trinity College (Fla.) at 5 p.m.
